Sax Mouthpiece Facings

Many people wrongly associate FACING with TIP OPENING. Let's clear up the ambiguity right now and define the facing length as the distance from the tip of the mouthpiece to where the mouthpiece breaks from the flat table of the reed. I offer a SHORT facing and a LONG facing and they are NOT drastically different. The easiest way to determine what fits you best is the following:
If your reed = #2.5 or lower - Short Facing
If your reed = #3 or higher - Long Facing

Example 1:  "I am a 30 year veteran of the Tenor sax, and like a large tip opening with a thin reed (#2)" - Short Facing suggested
Example 2 : "I am a student and like a small tip opening with a hard reed" - Long facing suggested
