Classical Baffle Design
The
Springer Classical baffle is designed to minimize reed sound. This "pure"
round sound is stylistically preferred when playing "legit" or
classical styles of saxophone music. Students should realize that
becoming a musician involves playing many different types of music and
being able to adapt and change to fit those different styles is
paramount. College studies will usually include repretoire from the
classical vein and you will be expected to emulate the classical style.
To facilitate, I make these mouthpieces to play freely and in-tune from
top to bottom. Traditionally, these are used with smaller tip openings
(alto .060" to .075"/ tenor .075" to .090") utilizing a harder (and usually French cut "i.e.
Hemke, Rico Royal, etc") reed. This type of setup removes the buzzier
sound of jazz setups. You will also need to learn a rounder, warmer
airstream technique, but your professor will have to take over that
conversation with you...
